April 15th, Already?

Friday, April 15th, 2011

Hi there, and Happy Friday!

How can this month already be half over! My trees are starting to have their pretty green leaves on them, my grass is growing, and it’s getting warmer! Granted, it’s not that warm today, but that’s okay. It’s not snowing, so I’ll take it.

April 15th is so many things:

  • Tax Day (even though it’s technically not until Monday.) How many of you have put off your taxes until this weekend? I still have to file my city taxes. Ugh!
  • In 1912, the Titanic sunk at 2:27 off the coast of Newfoundland, and that band kept playing!
  • The first bottle opener was invented in 1738. Seriously, where would we be without the bottle opener?!
  • The 1st Olympic games closed in Athens, Greece in 1896.
  • In 1990, “In Living Color” premiered on FOX-TV. I loved that show!

Easter Traditions

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

111-83753Easter is really late this year. The last time it was this late was 1943, when it was April 25.  It will not be this late again until 2038, when it will fall on April 25.

Whenever the date, Easter has always been one of my favorite celebrations.  As a child I remember the frilly matching dresses my mother would spend hours making for my sister and I – my Barbie doll would match us too!  I remember the Easter egg hunts in my grandfather’s backyard.  I remember the early morning Sunrise Services, and freezing in the cool morning air.  Last but not least, I remember the wonderful Easter Day feast of ham, potato salad, and coconut cake!

As a family we have carried many of these traditions over to our own children – while adding our own twist to this special day.  One of those newly created traditions is what we call THE GREAT CANDY SWAP!

Painting a Red Room!

Friday, April 8th, 2011

Annie edgingHi there, and Happy Friday!

I hope you’ve had a great week!

Last weekend, being the loving and caring daughter that I am, I helped my mom paint TWO bedrooms. We painted her spare bedroom a beautiful dark apple red, and her bedroom a light slate blue.

On Tuesday, I couldn’t figure out why my arms hurt so bad. And then I remembered how many coats we painted!

Spring Forward!

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

Spring AheadDaylight Saving Time officially began on Sunday, March 13th at 2:00AM.

This past Sunday the sun began to rise one hour later in the AM and set one hour later in the PM.

For some this means waking up to darkness or loosing an hour’s sleep. Then for others, like me, this is the beginning of longer daylight hours and holds the promise of warmer weather just on the horizon. Not sure how anyone else feels, but after this winter, warmer weather will be most welcome!

When I noticed that this coming weekend was the official start of DST, I did a little research.

Did you know that: (more…)

What’s in a Name?

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose

By any other name would smell as sweet.”

I’m sure many of you remember this Shakespeare quote from one of your high school British Lit classes?  You probably had to memorize it, as I did, along with several other lines from this famous play, Romeo and Juliet.  In this quote, Juliet Capulet  tells Romeo Montague that a name is an artificial and meaningless convention, and that she loves the person who is called “Montague,” not the Montague name and not the Montague family.

Well, I have a problem………first the good news!  I AM GOING TO BE A GRANDMA!  This past week I found out that around Oct. 10 I will have my very first grandchild.  I am beyond excited….I’m acting kind of giddy, if I tell the truth.  It’s really weird that the next generation in our family is about to begin.  We are beginning to enlarge our family tree…..I’m hoping there will be many more branches added to this big fat happy tree called the Buice family!

Thus the problem……..what will my precious grandchildren call me??? (more…)

Teacher Appreciation Day is May 3rd!

Set of 3 Teacher Plaques with Apples by Deb Strain - 1011-83801_G“WHOSE CHILD IS THIS?”

“Whose child is this?” I asked one day
Seeing a little one out at play
“Mine”, said the parent with a tender smile
“Mine to keep a little while
To bathe his hands and comb his hair
To tell him what he is to wear
To prepare him that he may always be good
And each day do the things he should”
“Whose child is this?” I asked again
As the door opened and someone came in
“Mine”, said the teacher with the same tender smile
“Mine, to keep just for a little while
To teach him how to be gentle and kind
To train and direct his dear little mind
To help him live by every rule
And get the best he can from school”
“Whose child is this?” I ask once more
Just as the little one entered the door
“Ours” said the parent and the teacher as they smiled
And each took the hand of the little child
“Ours to love and train together
Ours this blessed task forever.”

First Robin of Spring

Saturday, February 26th, 2011

RobinBelieve or not March 1st is this coming Tuesday!

I personally LOVE March!  It means spring is on its way.

The song birds will be coming back up North pretty soon.  I am not sure if this is just an Ohio thing, but they say when you see your first robin it is a sure sign that we will be enjoying the warmer weather in no time!

Celebrating President’s Day

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

"USA" Block with Beads - 083-29922Next Monday will be a holiday for many.  Every year, President’s Day falls on the third Monday of February. The holiday conveniently falls between two very important days –  Lincoln’s birthday, February 12 and Washington’s birthday, February 22.

In the spirit of honoring the great presidents of our nation I thought it would be fun to brush up on our American history.  For fun, see if you can name the president that said these famous quotes.  Some will be very familiar……others will not.

Good Luck!

Ice, Go Away!

Ice Storm AftermathHello, and Happy Friday!

Yesterday marked the start of the Chinese New Year, and the year of the Rabbit. According to Chinese astrologers, this year will be calmer than last year. Last year was the year of the Tiger!

The Chinese calendar is one of the oldest calendars in the world, and we’re in year 4 of a 12 year cycle. According to things I’ve read today, this year will focus on the arts, family and love. Sounds good to me! Last year was a rocky and emotional year for me, so I’m very much ready to sit back and relax.

New Year’s Resolutions: A History

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

“A New Year’s resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other.”

The  tradition of New Year’s Resolutions goes all the way back to 153 BC when a mythical king of early Rome was placed at the head of the calendar, where he looked back on past events and forward to the future. Once a tradition of performing simple good deeds, modern day resolutions often involve breaking negative patterns.
