Anxiously Awaiting!

Homemade Kraut Time!

This is a very exciting time at the Hammer household. We are anxiously awaiting the completion of our homemade sauerkraut! Much like waiting for the delivery of a child, you just have to be patient until the product is done “cooking”.

Making sauerkraut is very easy! You need cabbage, salt and man power. You shred the cabbage into a crock. As you layer the ingredients, you pound them and smash them into the crock. It is a little bit of a tedious process, and every year takes a little longer than we remember.

You then let the cabbage ferment for 4 weeks, then can it. The fermentation process is not for the light of stomach, but the final product is amazing. We love sauerkraut and eat it pretty frequently! We have not ever been able to buy in the store what we make! So now, we just be patient!

Have a great week!

Waiting for Baby…

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Animal watchingAs I get closer to the birth of my 3rd child, I never cease to be amazed at how my children are preparing themselves.

My 3 year old now always has tabs on her “babies”, snug and warm in a special blanket she loves. She was delighted at dinner the other night when I was able to have her baby “sit” next to her while she ate.

I recently was telling my 4 year old (soon to be 5 year old) and daughter how lucky I thought the baby was going to be because it (we do not find out the sex)  was going to have an older brother and older sister. My son let me know, “Mom, I am going to let Noelle handle this one.  I am just too tired for another one!”  He does periodically  believe that the parenting is conducted by a triumvirate.

They never cease to amaze me!

It has been a wonderful time.  It’s always nice to talk to and meet with our customers, as well as the staff from Palmer Marketing.

I took some pictures last year of the entertainment and wanted to share them with you!

Unforgettable!

Country BusinessI recently read this article through Country Business magazine.

There is some great advice for getting and keeping your customers attention.

As a retailer, have you employed some of these ideas with success?  What other advice would you offer?

As a consumer, what are some of the little things or services that company’s provided that have caught and kept your attention?

Too Much of a Good Thing in Retail Customer Service

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

I recently was shopping for shoes for my 2½  year old daughter. Shoe shopping for my kids is not always easy because we have strict policy about shoe laces. We only buy gym shoes and boys dress shoes with shoe laces—no Velcro, no zippers. They are not always easy to find.

I was in a chain shoe store that usually has pretty nice employees but really nothing  to write home about.   I was pleasantly surprised by a very nice and attentive young man. I would guess that he was 17-18 years old. I received a very sincere hello when I walked in. He was very nicely dressed, professionally I would say. He really caught my attention as being an excellent representation of the company he worked for.

As I walked to the back of the store where her shoes would be, he asked if he could help me find what I was looking for. I let him know that I was just going to look around, and that I usually am not able to find what I am looking for because I do not want to buy anything with zippers or Velcro.  With a sincerely disappointed look on his face, he let me know that he did not think that they had anything. Clearly determined to help me, he came out from behind the counter and followed me.  By the time he was standing next to me, I had been looking at the shelves for a couple of minutes. Then it hit me, I mean HIT me. (more…)

Greetings from Atlanta!

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

This week has flown by!

It all started as a whirlwind when Atlanta was bombarded with 8 inches of snow and then ½ inch of ice on top of that.  People were stranded trying to get out of and into Atlanta.

Those of us who live here were stranded in our own homes – for days.  Because of all that, the show had a slow beginning…but it didn’t last long. People began to arrive, the streets started to thaw, and Atlanta started to pop!

We have experienced another phenomenal show.

We have talked with and taken orders from many people…

Fair Fun with Flight Path Farms!

Leading the beefalo to their temporary lodgingLast week was a very exciting week for our household. It was the Stark County Fair! What made this fair even more special is that this is the first time we took animals to the fair.

At Flight Path Farms, we raise Beefalo, yes you read that right, beefalo. It is a cross between American bison (Buffalo) and beef cattle. The bison qualities in the animals make them very easy to raise, they love grass, do not need help giving birth, love a brisk cold wind and produce a low fat, low cholesterol beef.  As you see in the pictures, depending on the animal it is not always obvious to the naked eye that they are part bison.

Natalie Finds Inspiration in Atlanta!

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

111-00008Every January and July I head to Atlanta to work our showroom at the AmericasMart.

While it is very difficult to leave my family, it always turns out to be one of the most inspirational things I do for work all year.

It is so great to see everyone, and to hear about how things are going and what plans they have for the upcoming year. I get to talk to customers about what works and does not work. It is a great time, and I love seeing everyone. I learn so much about consumer trends and needs.

I come back to the office with more ideas than my hands can type.
