I have been raising peacocks for about 3 years now. They are so beautiful and I really enjoy them.
My adult peacocks, Fred and Wilma (I’m starting the Flinstone family), had 3 eggs last year and all 3 hatched in my incubator. The children’s names are Pebbles, Bam Bam, and Betty.
Unfortunately, Pebbles was hatched with a birth defect which affected her leg. She had surgery on her leg which worked for a while, but as she grew, her leg became damaged.
She cannot be with the other peacocks because they pick on her, so I decided she needed a friend. She seemed lonely in her stall by herself!
We went to an animal swap meet to get her a duck. (My thinking was that a duck could not peck her too terribly bad since their beaks are rounded).
It just so happened our Canadian distributors were in visiting, and they were glad to go help me pick out a duck. So, off we went! Jim, Vera, Joyce, and I went to the swap meet to get the perfect duck.
First, we saw a little boy about 7 years old who was selling chicks and ducklings. Jim immediately wanted to help the kid, and wanted me to buy his ducks, but I wanted to look around a bit. I found some ducklings that seemed like a good size, so I bought them.
Jim still wanted to help the kid, so we went back, and Jim tells the little boy, “We are here to buy your ducks.” I could see the little boys eyes welling up with tears. It was obvious that he was attached to the ducks and, did not want to sell them. The more we talked the worse he became. By this time Jim had given him $10.00 for his ducks, and had them in his hands. The little boy was melting, and I told Jim that he didn’t want to sell the ducks.
At that point, the boy’s father told us he loved the ducks, and he had even had them in his bed the previous night. The father told us he needed to sell the ducks because he had bought a rooster, and he had to pay for it. (I’m sure the dad was teaching his son the ins and outs of raising animals). So, Jim gave the kid back his ducks, and told him to keep the $10.00 (so much for the lesson!). The kid is ecstatic! However, the dad tells him he cannot do that, so Jim says we will take some chicks instead.
So, we ended up with 3 chicks and the 2 ducklings I had just bought. Joyce and Vera are laughing hysterically at farmer Jim!
As we turn the corner with our birds in hand, I spot this poor pathetic miniature pony. She is only about 2’ tall, needs a serious bath, hoofs trimmed, and just some TLC! I just cannot leave her there!
Now we have 3 chicks, 2 ducklings, a miniature pony, and on the way out there was a cage of 7 finches, and I decided that we needed a few birds for the office!
We love the birds in the office. They are very playful, and add a lot of personality to the office. Everyone enjoys their little squeaky chirps. If you hear them when you call Blossom Bucket, you will know what it is!
These great critters are our new addition to our 9 peacocks! We are going to continue to adopt animals that need a home. Who knows what we will find next!!!
