Have you ever wished for a do-over, or simply that something you said or did never really happened?
It’s kind of like trying to unpeel a banana. Once that sucker is peeled there is no undoing it. I’m sure you know what I mean – you wish you could stuff those words back into your mouth before they have completely rolled off your tongue?
WHY DID I SAY THAT?……. I REALLY DIDN’T MEAN FOR IT TO SOUND THAT WAY??…..IF ONLY I COULD TAKE THAT BACK! WHAT WAS I THINKING??
I’m sure we have all wished for “do-overs” at one time or another. It seems these mistakes take place when we are most stressed and pushed for time.
There is a famous story in our history books that tells of a senator, David Rice Atchison, who served as President FOR ONE DAY, March 4, 1849.
Now, there are discrepancies about whether he truly was considered President for a day but true or not, the fascinating story still circulates in history. Paul Harvey believed it, so there you go…it must be true!
Outgoing President James Polk’s term ended at noon on March 4, which was a Sunday. His successor, Zachary Taylor, refused to be sworn into office on the Sabbath and therefore was deferred for a day. According to the laws that were in place at the time, David Atchison was in line for the job. Normally, the vice president of the United States would fit this role, but vice president George Dallas’ term expired when Polk’s did. By law, the presidency then fell to the President Pro-Tem of the Senate, David Rice Atchison.
As a result, Atchison legally became the president for a twenty-four hour period, even though he was never elected to this office or sworn in. There are tales that he slept through the ENTIRE day of his presidency. Some say he was sleeping off a hangover, but others declare he was just too tired from all the work that needed to be finished before the new president took office.
Whatever the case – I bet he wishes he could have a do-over!
Now, if you were president for a day, what would you do?
Here’s to all of our mistakes, blunders, and awful acts of stupidity – cheers! We could all use a few do-overs!!!!!
