Fun Facts on the “Bucket Birds”
posted by annie, in Staff Notes
Hi there, and Happy Saturday!
I hope you’re having a lovely holiday weekend so far!
If you know me at all, you know it’s pretty much impossible for me to NOT get involved with anything involving animals. I have had my share of pets, worked at a pet store, and even volunteered at a wildlife rehabilitation center. Once the Bucket Birds were brought into the office, I kind of went nuts about them and decided to learn everything I could about them.
Here are some fun facts about our feathered friends!
They only grow to be about 4 inches long
They are native to Australia and Indonesia, but are found in the US also
They can live anywhere from 5 to 10 years! Wow!
Male zebra finches learn their “song” from their fathers – females do not have songs! Their call sometimes sounds like a toy laser gun, and every time we hear it in the office, we laugh!
Female zebra finches have oranges beaks, while the males have red beaks
The zebra finch chicks typically all have black beaks when they are born, and some of them will start to change colors at about a month old!
If all of the eggs hatch into chicks, we will have nineteen birds here… whew!
Have a great day!!
