HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!!!!!!!!!
Christmas is behind us and 2010 is only a few days before us. We all love the Christmas traditions that our families share but what about New Year’s Day traditions?
Since I am from the South I have grown up with the southern way of bringing in the New Year. I remember, as a little girl, loving the fact that I could stay up past 12:00, set off fireworks, bang pots and pans with a wooden spoon, and scream “Happy New Year” at the top of my lungs. Yes, that seems so elementary, but it brings back great memories. My family now does the same thing, but in a more grown-up version.
The best part, though, is on New Year’s Day. We all gather together to watch football and have our New Year’s Day meal. As children we were told to make sure we ate plenty of greens (collard greens or turnip greens) and black-eyed peas on the first day of the year. The greens stood for dollar bills, and the brown black-eyed peas stood for pennies. If we ate our fill of these it would surely bring us lots of money during the New Year. So, we would stuff ourselves on that day to ensure our new year was prosperous. Today, we still keep our meal the same: barbeque or venison roast, collard greens, black-eyed peas, and our favorite sweet potato soufflé. Even though we still enjoy the tradition, we all know that it’s the blessings of the Lord that bring riches.
Whether you have a tradition for the first day of the year or not, I hope you enjoy your celebration of 2009 leaving us and 2010 arriving. Be sure to eat your greens and black-eyed peas!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

Thanks for sharing, Kathy! That sounds like a lot of fun! It’s a little too cold at New Year’s up here in Ohio for running about outdoors, but I would have loved that as a kid. Now, I have to make do surrounded by good friends and snuggly blankets–not too bad a trade off.
Thank you for your comment! We’re very happy to have Kathy contributing to the blog, and we’re looking forward to her upcoming entries!
It was so nice to read about how a different part of the U.S. celebrates New Years Eve and day. Thanks; was so thoughtful of her to share!
