Wednesday DIY Project – Have a “Blast”!!

Happy Memorial Day from Bucketville, USA

Happy Memorial Day from Bucketville, USA

Here is a cute DIY Project, just in time for your Memorial Day!

Supplies you will need:
12″ tall paper mache, paperboard or cardboard box
Paint brush
Red, white and blue paints (I used Barn Red, Navy Blue and Antique White)
Brown paint or stain (optional)
Ruler
3 pipe cleaners (white, brown or black)
Glue or hot glue gun

Step One:

Draw vertical lines 1″ to 1 1/2″ apart on your box. You don’t need to do the lid; it will be painted a solid color.

Step 2

On the box, paint every other section white. Don’t worry if you don’t stay perfectly within the lines – any mistakes will be covered in the next step, which is why you want to use your lightest color of paint first! While your lines are drying, paint your entire lid blue, and allow everything to dry completely.

Step Three:

Paint the remaining spaces on your firecracker red, and let dry.

Step 4

Make a small hole in the middle of your lid; approximately 1/4″ in diameter, or about the size of your average pencil. I used a drill, but anything that will create a neat hole is fine.

Step Five: (optional)

To give your firecracker a slightly distressed or antiqued look, mix a small amount of brown paint and water. The consistency should be thin enough that the mixture can be sparsely applied with a paper towel. Crumple a paper towel or napkin to create an uneven surface, then dip it into the paint mixture. Lightly dab this on your firecracker, covering as much or as little as you prefer. Let dry.

Step Six:

Fold the 3 pipe cleaners in half. To get the spiral look in the photo, I just wrapped them around my finger a few times! Place the folded end of the pipe cleaners through the hole you made in the lid of your firecracker. Push through about 1/2″ an inch or so and fold it over to hold them against the inside of the lid. Then, add just a touch of regular or hot glue so that they are extra secure.

Finished and Ready for Display

Finished and Ready for Display

Add your favorite Blossom Bucket Americana or patriotic item to the top of your firecracker! I used our “USA with Fireworks” (item #093-80877) and item #093-80861, “What a Blast!”

Whether displayed in your store or your home, this fast and easy project is perfect for Memorial Day and the 4th of July, or as a compliment to an Americana collection, and is sure to “light up” your celebrations!
